The canal network in the Black Country offers superb walking in an urban area. Between Stourbridge and Dudley, the canal climbs 145 feet through a series of sixteen locks. After lock twelve, the visitor comes to Wordsley Dock, which was declared a Conservation Area in 1977. The locks here are called ‘The Staircase’ because they are placed so close together. Look out for the old iron split bridge which allowed the rope between the horse and boat to pass through. The bridge allows visitors access to the restored lock cottage.
