Ben Nevis, at 1344 metres, is the highest mountain in Britain. The name ‘Nevis’ is possibly derived from a Gaelic word meaning ‘venemous’. If so this would certainly capture the dark side of this peak which rises dramatically behind the Highland town of Fort William. Along it’s north face stretch some two kilometres of cliffs. Anyone heading to the top of this magnificent mountain needs to take account of the swiftly changing weather conditions and be competent at navigation.
