This four-star tourist attraction provides a comprehensive look back to the Industrial Era with the most complete charcoal-fuelled ironworks in Britain. Pig iron was produced here from 1753 because of the abundance of oak used to fuel the process; the raw metal was actually transported all the way from Furnace in Cumbria. The centrepiece of the site, managed by Historic Scotland, is the furnace. You can look right up it from the hearth and learn about the lives of those who used feed it.
