Cape Wrath, from the Norse for turning point, lies at the extreme north-western tip of the Scottish mainland. It’s a place apart – to get there you need to catch a ferry across the Kyle of Durness, followed by a 15km walk, mountain bike cycle, or minibus trip over a windswept moorland. Enjoy extensive views if you’re lucky or peer down the high cliffs from the huge foghorn. A lighthouse, built in 1828 by Robert Stevenson stands sentinel over this treacherous stretch of coast. For ferry and bus details call the Durness Tourist Information Centre on 01971 511259.
