Carbisdale Castle stands on the south bank of the Kyle of Sutherland. It was built between 1906 and 1917 for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland. It has had an illustrious history and even served as a royal refuge. Since 1945 the castle has provided accommodation as a youth hostel but it remains open to the public to view its spectacular rooms and treasures. These include a large art collection and fine Italian marble statues on display in the main gallery.
