Castle Tioram - the ancestral home of the Macdonalds of Clanranald - is one of the foremost surviving examples of a 13th century castle in Scotland. The castle was the principal stronghold within the Lordship of Garmoran, which includes Moidart, Rum, Eigg, Canna, the Uists and Barra. It was ideally placed to monitor marine traffic moving between the southern Hebrides and Skye or the outer isles and the route inland via Loch Shiel.
