On a cold sleet laden day on April 16, 1746, the Jacobite forces under Bonnie Prince Charlie, were defeated by the Government army at Culloden under the Duke of Cumberland, precipitating an indiscriminate slaughter of fleeing Highlanders and their families. You can walk over the battlefield’s heathery terrain which daunted the less powerful Highland army better suited to an open plain and see exactly where both sides lined up. There’s a café and AV presentation at the visitor centre.
