Asked what is mainland Britain’s most northerly point most people automatically say “John o’Groats”. However, the distinction actually goes to Dunnet Head, some 15km west of the famous village. Surrounded by water, the headland offers a dramatic view of the Orkney Islands, including the Old Man of Hoy. The Dunnet Head lighthouse was built in 1831 by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of the author Robert Louis Stevenson. On a good day there’s a fantastic panorama of the northern Scottish coastline, from Cape Wrath in the west to Duncansby Head in the east.
