Dominating the head of lonely Loch Shiel, the Glenfinnan Monument, erected in 1815, pays tribute to Bonnie Prince Charlie who began his campaign to restore the exiled Stuarts to the throne here on 19 August 1745. The prince and his followers marched as far south into England before their eventual defeat the following year at Culloden. The nearby visitor centre has plenty of information on his exploits and a café for the battle weary. Harry Potter fans will recognise the Glenfinnan Viaduct behind the centre.
