Kilchurn Castle is at the north-east end of Loch Awe, 2.5 miles west of Dalmally and off the A85. It consists of a square tower, built by Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy in about 1550. It was much enlarged in 1693 and incorporates the first purpose-built barracks in Scotland. The substantial ruins are some of the most picturesque in the country with spectacular views down Loch Awe. Kilchurn is possibly best appreciated by walking around the headland on which it stands. It looks very different from different angles, and the barracks are in stark contrast to the medieval feel of the tower on the south side. Internally you can appreciate some parts of the castle, but access to others can depend on whether the castle is manned at the time or not.
