Named from the Gaelic ‘Loch of the Ships’, Loch Long extends from Arrochar to the Clyde coast. Its head is surrounded by a dramatic cluster of mountains known as the Arrochar Alps and the whole area is very scenic. The Vikings also appreciated this sea loch, which penetrates far inland. In 1236 they launched a surprise attack on Loch Lomond after hauling their boats the short distance between the two lochs.
