Loch Ness is undoubtedly Scotland’s most famous loch, largely because of its association with Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, which is said to live here. Nessie was supposedly first spotted by St Columba in the 6th century and the area attracts thousands of tourists every year eager to spot the creature. Loch Ness is the largest of three lochs in the Great Glen, measuring a mighty 23 miles long and a mile wide. Boat trips are available from points around the loch for visitors to take in the majestic views.
