The Skye road bridge has become a popular way to cross from the mainland at Kyle of Lochalsh to Kyleakin on the Isle of Skye and a tourist attraction in its own right. Before the bridge was built in 1995, access to Skye was only available by ferry. As a result of Skye’s popularity, this meant long traffic queues for ferries, sometimes up to 4 hours. A road link to Skye was proposed as early as the 1930s but construction did not begin until 1992 with completion three years later.
