Glen Lonan, which lies between Oban and Taynuilt, is rich in prehistoric remains. Of particular note, is Strontoiller where the road runs by a four-metre high standing stone (pictured). According to tradition, this Bronze Age monolith and an adjacent small cairn mark the burial place of the Irish Fenian hero Diarmuid. The stone, called ‘Clach na Carraig' or 'Clach Diarmid’, is one of many places in Scotland which is claimed to be the warrior’s resting place. Nearby stands a large cairn with a kerb of granite boulders.
