All the guidebooks about the North of Scotland suggest that it is a baron moorland only populated by scattered villages, which is true to a degree.
However, those travelling up the A9 and then A99 might have a surprise in the form of the little town of Wick, which looks remarkably like any other Scottish town - a far cry from a remote, seldom visited enclave of a place.
Wick isn't the most northerly town - that honour goes to Thurso, but it does somehow feel like the beginning or end of civilisation until you head out across the ferry towards the Orkney Islands.
I didn't get chance to spend long there, but another big advantage of Wick - it seems far enough away to have avoided getting a Tesco... So far.
- Mrs. Patterson
