The Royal Academy of Music itself was founded in 1822 and quickly developed into one of the most important institutions concerned with music anywhere in the world. The main museum for the Academy is based in the York Gate building that was designed by eminent architect John Nash in 1822. The museum forms an integral part of Academy life and is home to a large collection of instruments, photographs, interactive demonstrations, documents and pieces of music from throughout the ages.
