At the time of its completion in 1911, Sir Aston Webb’s Triple Arched structure was used to house the offices of the Sea Lords. It is also the ceremonial entrance to the Mall, which leads down to Buckingham Palace. The arch was originally commissioned by King Edward VII, serving as a memorial for his late mother Queen Victoria. The Latin inscription along the top of the arch is a reminder of this. In English the words mean "In the tenth year of King Edward VII, to Queen Victoria, from most grateful citizens, 1910."
