Arnold Bennett was born in Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire but moved to London, making it his permanent home after studying at the University of London. Bennett is one of the best known British novelists of the late 19th Century and is much cerebrated by critics of the literary area. He lived much of his time i this great house, it serving as a place of work as well as a place of dwelling. The immediate area helped inspire many of Bennett's novels.
