This P Morley Holder designed theatre was built in 1927, and started out its life as a theatre club. In its early years the theatre hosted many world firsts, including the premieres of Orton’s Entertaining Mr Sloane and O’ Neill’s The Iceman Cometh. The Arts Theatre was also the first London home of the Royal Shakespeare Company, although this did not last for long. It then was the home of the Unicorn Children’s Theatre from 1966 to 1988. Despite its reputation, the theatre suffered some poor times in the 1990’s until it was refurbished in 2000.
