The Barbican Arts Centre was built on a bomb site, a relic of the Second World War. Construction started in the 1960s. The completed complex is packed with shops, restaurants, cinemas, a concert hall, theatres, a public library and an art gallery. The small recital room in the original planning evolved into the magnificent Barbican Hall.
