Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott this iconic landmark was completed in 1939 and powered much of South London until its closure in 1980. The dark majesty of the Grade II listed building has inspired artists and musicians for decades. Most notably it can be seen featured on the sleeve of the rock group Pink Floyd’s album ‘Animals’. Since the early eighties the enormous structure has been largely abandoned apart from the occasional special event staged in the grounds. Plans are underway to convert the building into a luxury riverside apartment and leisure complex.

One of my passions is old buildings and Battersea Power Station certainly qualifies as one of those, it is also an iconic part of the London skyline. I am definitely in the camp that says preserve it by finding a use for it. I also find it sad that every time I travel past it on the train there is another section in scaffolding as repairs are being made to its fabric. I say preserve it and make use of this wonderful building. - Joel Sangerson
