Berkeley Square exists due to an agreement between Lord Berkeley of Stratton and the Duke of Devonshire. In 1636, Lord Berkeley sold his house in Piccadilly to the Duke and in doing so agreed that the northward view would remain protected from any future building development. This agreement resulted in the creation of the square in the first part of the 18th Century. Although the square is no longer laid out in the original design, it remains a restful place from which to escape the bustle of the surrounding area.
