Throughout history the great River Thames has been one of the primary forms of transport for both pedestrians and freight. In recent centuries more and more transport has turned to road and rail, leaving the river to flow alone. Transport for London have worked hard in the new Millennium to reinvigorate the river by building several new piers at key locations in central London. The piers allow commuters to travel in and out of the city as well as tourists take pleasure tours around the major river bank sites.
