Blackfriars is named for the habit worn by the Dominican Friars who moved to the area from Holborn in 1276. In 1529 Blackfriars Priory was the location for a divorce hearing between Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. The priory was closed in 1538 during the dissolution of the monasteries. The building itself was destroyed in the Great Fire of London.
