Blackfriars is named for the habit worn by the Dominican Friars who moved to the area from Holborn in 1276. In 1529 Blackfriars Priory was the location for a divorce hearing between Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. The priory was closed in 1538 during the dissolution of the monasteries.
