Blackheath is a large heathland area close to Greenwich Park south of the River Thames. It has a huge sporting historical significance for several reasons. It is charted by tradition as the place at which the game of Golf was introduced to England from Scotland in 1608 and is home to one of the oldest Golf Clubs in the country. However the heath is probably most famous for Blackheath Rugby Club which in 1858 became the first club in the world to have unrestricted membership and still exists on the heath to today.
