Blackheath Village is located on the south side of the heath and is home to shops, restaurants and pubs. Blackheath probably derives its name from being a plague victim burial site in 1665. The heath was a rallying point for both the Peasants' Revolt in 1381 and for the Kentish rebellion in 1450.
