Brixton is home to one of the most cosmopolitan communities in London and the famous outdoor market has something for everyone. It boasts the largest collection of Afro-Caribbean foodstuffs of any market in Europe plus foods, goods and sundries from across the globe. If you’re feeling adventurous why not ‘rock down to Electric Avenue’ to sample some shark meat, breadfruit, buy a DVD player or a new coat. There has been a market on the site since the 1870s but it became a focal point of Brixton’s ethnic communities in the 1950s. Just a stone’s throw from Brixton tube and mainline train station, there’s no excuse for not stopping by.
