Hidden in this quiet area of Old Chelsea is the home of the writer and historian Thomas Carlyle and his wife Jane. Thomas Carlyle lived in the Queen Anne house, built in 1708, for 47 years from 1834 until 1881. Jane Carlyle’s skilful home making is very apparent with Victorian period décor, furniture, pictures, portraits and books. The house has an evocative atmosphere as you discover the domestic and literary life they shared with many visitors including Chopin, Dickens, Tennyson and George Elliott.
