The current bridge on this site was designed by the legendary architect G. Topham Forest in 1937 and replaces an earlier suspension bridge. The first crossing was built in the mid 19th Century to link the affluent Chelsea suburb with the busy trading areas around Battersea and Clapham. In the 1960s the bridge was famous for being a ‘hangout’ of ‘rockers’ as they sat on their motorbikes causing trouble for passers by.
