There has probably been a church on this site since the beginning of Christianity in England. Before the Second World War it was thought that the chapel dated from around the thirteenth Century. However during the war the church was almost completely destroyed by heavy German bombing and had to be rebuilt. The church is probably most famous for its famous resident Sir Thomas More during the sixteenth Century.
