The City Temple was built in 1874, and was designed to replace a non-conformist place of worship. It is situated next to St Andrew’s in Holborn. The church is perhaps most famous for the events that occurred within its walls it the 1920s. The church was known as somewhere for ‘controversial discussion’, with speakers such as Leslie Wethered talking on subjects such as birth control. Unfortunately, the building was destroyed during the War, but it was rebuilt in a grander fashion and known as the ‘Cathedral of the Free Churches’.
