As one of the first theatres to be built to comply with new fire laws in the 19th century, the Comedy Theatre has survived intact ever since it was completed in 1881. Originally known as the Royal Comedy Theatre, the venue did not have permission to use the ‘Royal’ prefix, and this was dropped in 1884. The theatre was designed by Thomas Verity and is famous for being part of the revolution that helped to overturn stage censorship in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Successful productions include A Day In The Death Of Joe Egg and Little Shop Of Horrors.
