This monument was unveiled in 1963 to mark the 100th anniversary since the first ever underground train on earth rolled under this point to begin what would become a commonplace form of transport in every major city in the world. Baker Street Station was the first to be built, originally taking steam passengers on short trips across the centre of the city to other termini. The Metropolitan Railway as it was then known was quickly joined by may other lines that slowly amalgamated to form the London Underground as we know it today.
