This arch is all that remains of Dial Square, one of John Vanburgh's earliest buildings. Completed between 1717 and 1720, it housed the Royal Gun Factories, where gun barrels were machined and bored. In 1886, the workers formed a football club - Dial Square FC. Two week later, it was renamed and Arsenal FC was born. The sundial on the arch, which gives the square its name, was added in 1764.
