The Dinosaur Park is just one of many attractions within the historic Crystal Palace Park in South London. Joseph Paxton, architect of the Crystal Palace, scientist Richard Owen and sculptor Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, created the dinosaur models. Amazingly, the statues were created in 1854, just 30 years after Owen first termed the phrase Dinosauria meaning ‘Terrible Lizards’. Placards throughout the park illustrate the difference between Owen’s vision of the different species of the dinosaurs and modern understanding of how they would look, but the dinosaur park remains a great, free, attraction, adored by children.
