A memorial to ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’, famous for marching his 10,000 men to the top of the hill and then down again. The 124ft structure commemorating the second son of George III was paid for by docking every soldier in the British Empire one days pay. The statue, which was chiselled out of pink granite, was designed by Sir Richard Westmacott and was finished in 1833. The Duke of York, Frederick, was also well known for being ‘The Duke of Debt’, and when he died owed over £2 million.
