This is the oldest public art gallery in England. Purpose built in 1817 by Sir John Soane, it has skylights that illuminate the pictures below without glare or shadow. This design has been much copied in other galleries. Inside, an outstanding collection, originally acquired in the 1790s for the King of Poland, includes works by Poussin, Claude, Rubens, Murillo, Van Dyck, Rembrandt and Watteau. A licensed café, overlooking landscaped gardens, and a shop are also here. Dulwich Picture Gallery was highly commended by the Charity Awards 2006.
