During the Second World War the command of the Allied forces changed during different stages of the conflict. In the later stages after the Americans entered the war, Dwight Eisenhower who would go on to become American president, took the role of commander in chief of the Allied attack. He oversaw the D Day landings and several other brave missions from 1944 onwards from this house in the historic square.
