Enfield was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086; it became a market town in 1303, when Edward I granted a charter to hold a weekly market, which is still held today. Enfield was home to the Lee-Enfield .303 rifle, which was standard issue for the British Army until 1957. There are shopping centres in Southgate, Palmers Green and Cockfosters.
