The laboratory where Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin is situated within the complex of the great St. Mary's hospital at the heart of central London. This tiny laboratory which is still open to the public on occasion was witness to one of the most important scientific and medical breakthroughs ever to take place. Penicillin and other subsequent antibiotics have allowed doctors to treat with one dose diseases which used to kill people.
