This theatre was built on a particularly difficult site, which contained an underground river, and so the design expertise of both Walter Emden and CJ Phipps were enlisted. The theatre was completed in 1889 and is Grade 2 listed. The theatre originally had four levels, but the top level was eventually closed, reducing the capacity to 656. The auditorium and front of the building were restored in the late 1980’s. The theatre is most famous for its comedy shows, with the productions of No Sex Please We’re British and An Inspector Calls being particularly noteworthy.
