Born on 19th February 1900 in Asia Minor, the country now known as Turkey, George Seferis is noted for his achievement as one of the most important Greek poets of the 20th Century. His influences included Kavafis, T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound. He also was successful in a career as the Greek Ambassador in the United Kingdom, a post which he held from 1957 to 1962. He died on 20th September 1971, a Nobel Prize winner for his contribution to literature.
