This attractive building is now a private residential estate, but has a fascinating history. Established in 1914 as a research centre for the General Post Office, it played a role in the deciphering of the German Enigma code during World War II. Tommy Flowers put together his Colossus computer on this site, later reassembling it at Bletchley Park, where decoders had initially rejected it. Other innovations that took place here include the first talking clock. In the 1960s, the centre moved to a bigger location in Suffolk. The estate was named Flowers Close in honour of the great man.
