The original Guildhall Art Gallery was burned down in an air raid in 1941. The new gallery, opened in 1999, in the Guildhall Yard, has an enlightened policy of displaying a manageable 250 works of art at a time, drawing on its extensive collection, along with a variety of temporary exhibitions. It is imposing building constructed in keeping with its medieval surroundings. The many exhibitions tend to focus on a particular theme in London’s history or culture. Admission is free to residents and workers in the City of London, and the charge levied to others is extremely modest.
