Hackney has a rich history as it lay in the Catevallauni area of pre-Roman England. Ermine Street was a Roman road. Sutton House is the oldest surviving house, built in 1535 when the village of Hackney flourished. Notable residents have included Thomas Sutton, Samuel Courtauld and Joseph Priestly.
