Hayes, situated on the Grand Union Canal and the Great Western Railway, was a perfect industrial location in the late 19th century. Nestlé located its UK headquarters there. George Orwell was a schoolmaster at The Hawthorns High School for Boys, now The Fountain House Hotel. Hayes' most famous resident was "the father of English music", William Byrd.
