After studying at Eton and graduating from Oxford in 1799 Henry Hallam started his career as one of the foremost historians of his generation. He lived much of his life in the centre of London in this charming house. His theories were new and exciting in an academic landscape that had begun to stagnate since the Enlightenment. Hallam is still thought of as one of the great pioneers of modern historical thought.
