Holy Trinity Church, Clapham Common, was designed by the architect Kenton Couse as the new parish church and was completed in 1776. The land was donated Penelope Pitt, a descendant of the Atkins family who had inherited the Manor. The church became famous as the church of the Clapham Sect and memorial tablets outside the church commemorate their part in the abolition of slavery. The building is situated amongst trees on the edge of the common, close to Clapham Old Town and remains a central feature in Clapham’s social life.
