The area around Mill Street has now been developed into one of the trendiest places to live and go out, but during Victorian times this historic area was London's most notorious slum. Surrounded by swampy marshland extending from the Thames, Jacobs Island is featured in the Charles Dickens novel Oliver Twist. The area is though to have inspired a great many of the darker artworks of Victorian times.
