James Purdey the younger had worked in the gun industry since he was a young man, becoming one of the best renowned gunsmiths in London by 1813, the year of the Battle of Waterloo. It was the next year in 1814 that he decided to open his own gun shop on the corner of South Audley Street at the heart of Mayfair. This shop, which he lived above, became the premier gunsmiths in London and is still operating today, maintaining the old world charm that would have existed in Purdey’s day.
